EES is live and ETIAS is next: what travelers to Europe need to know in 2026

News and ideas

TL;DR — The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) replaced passport stamps for non-EU short-stay travelers in October 2025. ETIAS, the €20 travel authorization, is now scheduled to follow in late 2026. If you carry a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, or other visa-exempt passport, here’s what changes.

What is EES?

EES is an automated registry that records your fingerprints, face scan, and entry/exit data every time you cross an external Schengen border for a short stay. It applies to non-EU nationals — including UK passport holders post-Brexit. There’s no fee.

The first time you enter, you’ll spend an extra 1–3 minutes at a kiosk. Subsequent crossings are faster: just a quick face match.

Where it applies

All 29 Schengen countries (Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania are now in). Ireland and Cyprus are not.

Where it doesn’t

Non-Schengen EU members and the rest of the world — your home country’s exit checks are unchanged.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization, not a visa. You apply online before you fly, pay €20 (free for under-18 and over-70 travelers), and get a multi-year approval tied to your passport. Most applications are auto-approved within minutes. Expect a small share to need extra processing — apply at least 96 hours before departure.

What changes for travelers in 2026

  1. Allow extra time on first arrival. First-EES enrollment can add 30+ minutes at busy airports during peaks.
  2. Keep using the 90/180 rule. EES enforces it automatically — there’s no more “lost” stamp. Overstays are now precisely tracked.
  3. Watch your passport’s 6-month validity. EES rejects entries that don’t meet the rule, even by a day.
  4. Check the ETIAS launch date before booking late-2026 flights. Even after launch there’s typically a transitional grace period; the European Commission has confirmed details on its official ETIAS page.

Who is exempt from ETIAS?

EU citizens, long-stay visa or residence-permit holders, diplomatic passport holders, and travelers under 18 / over 70 (still need to apply, but the fee is waived).

Common questions

Do I need ETIAS to visit Ireland or the UK?

No. Ireland is outside Schengen. The UK has its own equivalent — ETA, £16, already required for most visa-exempt visitors as of 2025.

Will my old Schengen calculator still work?

Yes, the 90 days within any 180-day period rule is unchanged. EES just enforces it better.

What if I’m denied ETIAS?

You’ll get a reason and an appeal route. Most denials trace back to data mismatches (name spelling, expired passport) or past overstays.

Does EES record cash on entry?

No. The €10,000 cash declaration is a separate customs rule and still requires a paper form on entry/exit of the EU.

How to prepare

  • Renew passports with at least 6 months validity past your return.
  • Apply for ETIAS as soon as it goes live if you have firm late-2026 plans.
  • Add a 60–90 minute connection buffer for first-time post-EES arrivals.
  • Photograph your ETIAS approval email and store offline; the authorization is digital and tied to your passport, not a printed sticker.
